Speaking at the business forum being held in parallel to the Seventh Summit of the Americas in Panama for the second year running, President Danilo Medina called for the globalization of micro and small-scale businesses and called for private and public sectors to work together for a peaceful Americas. He expressed his conviction that alliances between governments and the private sector are the best way to overcome the challenges and create opportunities. He said these agreements could turn small business into exporters.
Medina called for breaking the vicious circle that prevents small business from benefiting from globalization. He advocated for increased productivity through incorporating technology, innovation and product development. The President referred to several experiences in the Dominican Republic where support for producers to improve quality, develop designation of origin, access to markets, promotion of business associations and clusters has contributed to the globalization of small business.
During his talk he spoke of the comprehensive nature of the Education Pact in the DR. On the issue of the Electricity Pact, currently under discussion, he expressed optimism that a national consensus for building a competitive and reliable electricity generation and distribution system would soon be reached.
The Presidency also reported that as part of yesterday’s agenda President Medina met with Francisco Aristeguieta, CEO of Citigroup Latin America. He is responsible for all businesses in the 23 countries where Citi is present in Latin America, with the exception of Mexico. The Presidency reported that they discussed financing needs for the coal-fired power plant the government is supporting in Punta Catalina and the construction of 25,000 low-cost housing units in Juan Bosch City, the largest government housing project ever built in the DR.
