Former President Leonel Fernandez engaged in a show of strength by filling the Palacio de los Deportes in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in Santo Domingo yesterday, Sunday, 12 April 2015. The three-time President said that the event was not aimed at creating factions within the party or to exclude anyone, but to guarantee its unity.
At present, factions within the Medina administration are seeking the support of party members to get the PLD-majority Congress to pass a change in the 2010 Constitution to authorize President Danilo Medina to run for re-election.
Meanwhile, former President Leonel Fernandez has announced his aspirations to the PLD candidacy in the May 2016 election.
The ruling party’s influential political committee is set to meet on 19 April 2015, reportedly to decide on the issue of re-election.
During the event, deputy Ruben Maldonado announced the participation of 16 (of 32) senators and 61 (of 190) Congressional deputies in the Fernandez political campaign.
