47-year old Kenny Atkinson has been appointed as coach of the Dominican Republic national basketball team, senior team management executive Eduardo Najri announced yesterday, Monday 13 April 2015. The Dominican Republic team is ranked 20th in the world.
Atkinson’s hiring is in keeping with the tradition of first-rate coaches by the company that is managing the team’s development. Al Horford, a Dominican national team member, plays for the Atlanta Hawks.
Before joining the Atlanta Hawks, Atkinson was the director of player development for the Houston Rockets (2007-08), and then joined the New York Knicks coaching staff as assistant coach through 2012. He is a former professional basketball player who played in Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands from 1990 to 2004.
