The new information system installed by the Migration Office in Las Americas International Airport is causing long delays. Some passengers complained that the lines were causing them to miss their flights.
Apparently, the root of the problem is that United States citizens are being rejected by the system to stop them from evading the payment of overstay fines due to not having a valid legal residency in the country.
These passengers are then sent to the overstay payment booth in the same room where they have to line up again to pay the fine or are allowed to pass through if it is proven they have not overstayed. The situation is even worse when two flights are leaving at the same time.
Yesterday, Monday 13 April 2015, flights were leaving and arriving from New York, Miami, Puerto Rico, Atlanta, New Jersey, Newark, Caracas, Venezuela, Panama and Curacao.
Passengers say that they have to wait up to two hours to have documents checked before boarding their flights, a process that used to take just 15 or 20 minutes.
