Yesterday afternoon, Monday 13 April 2015, President Danilo Medina made one of his unannounced visits to the La Nueva Barquita housing development to check the progress of the construction of 1,620 low-cost homes. Families living on the banks of the Ozama River whose homes would flood after heavy rains are being relocated there.
The President inspected the two and three-bedroom homes and spoke to the construction team, engineers and technicians.
Patricia Cuevas, coordinator of the Enforcement Unit for the Change to La Barquita and Surrounding Areas (URBE), highlighted that the project aims to be a model for social and human transformation and invited international organizations to take a closer look at it.
La Nueva Barquita seeks to respond to the problem of pollution in the area. Cuevas told the President that they were also raising environmental and community awareness.
Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta, businessman and project coordinator Jose Miguel Gonzalez, and the President’s personal assistant, Carlos Pared Perez were also present.
The complex is being developed in three stages. The first consists of 830 homes and 50 shops, the second will include 800 homes and 40 shops and the third will be a park.
