The president of the PRM, a breakaway faction of the PRD, Andres Bautista has told El Dia that the judiciary’s problems stem from the decision to appoint judges with political inclinations made by the National Magistrates Council during the Leonel Fernandez government in 2011, which he says has resulted in an untrustworthy justice system. He said that almost all the judges respond to party lines, especially of the ruling PLD Political Committee.
The president of the Supreme Court of Justice Mariano German was a member of the Political Committee, as was controversial Supreme Court of Justice Alejandro Moscoso Segarra. Moscoso Segarra recently made headlines for his dismissal of the Attorney General Office’s administrative corruption and asset laundering case against senator Felix Bautista, who is organization secretary of the ruling PLD party.
“In a country without justice, there can be no democracy,” said Andres Bautista.
“I call on society to stop being indifferent to the causes that affect us. We are obliged to defend the future of the new generations because what today is indifference is complicity with the bad things that are happening.”
In his opinion in recent years the PLD has taken a hold of all areas of the state and has only changed its mask. “It is no secret that the Political Committee of the PLD is what has governed in the past 16 years,” he said. “Nothing happens here without its members deciding on it.”
Bautista announced that the PRM convention would take place on 26 April 2015.
The two leading pre-candidates are former President Hipolito Mejia and Mejia’s former vice presidential candidate Luis Abinader.
