Trucking restored with Haiti

The National Federation of Dominican Transport (Fenatrado) announced that an agreement to restore cargo traffic with the Dominican Republic today, Wednesday, 15 Aprilwas reached with the Haitian authorities yesterday. The federation, which controls most of the truck traffic in the country, had announced a stop to their services on Monday, 13 April after four trucks were attacked and an estimated US$90,000 worth of goods was stolen. Peralta said the Haitian authorities committed to pay for the damage after the container trucks were looted when passing through the Haitian border town of Ounaminthe. Spokesman Geovanny Escoto said the meeting took place at the provincial government headquarters in Dajabon. He said that the police in Haiti have recovered most of the stolen merchandise and they have pledged to increase border surveillance to prevent future unrest.

It was announced that security at the border has been increased and members of the Haitian National Police and the United Nations peacekeeping forces are now in Ouanaminthe looking for the killers of Chilean Minustah peacekeeper Rodrigo Andres Sanhueza. Soldiers are also checking vehicles leaving Ouanaminthe for Dajabon in case those responsible for the crime try to flee to the Dominican Republic.
