Loans approved for social security and Punta Catalina

On Wednesday, 15 April 2015, the Senate approved loans totaling more than US$808 million for the consolidation of the health sector and Social Security and construction of the coal-fired electricity generator at Punta Catalina.

The financing was granted first by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Brazil’s National Economic and Social Development Bank (BANDES). The US$150 million will be used to finance the Health Sector and Social Security Consolidation Support Program. The Dominican government with the Inter-American Development Bank signed the loan agreement and the Executive Branch reintroduced it on 12 January 2015.

The other loan that was approved is for US$656 million to provide the funds to be used in the construction of two coal-fired generators at Punta Catalina. This financing was granted by the Brazilian export bank Bandes and the Norberto Odebrecht company, and will be executed by the Dominican Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE). This loan is covered in the General State Budget for 2015.
