Fenatrado: Trucks to Haiti only with Minustah protection

The president of the powerful trucking union Fenatrado, Blas Peralta says that trucks will only travel to Haiti if each vehicle is guarded by a Minustah officer. According to Peralta, Haitian protestors have directed all their rage at the truck drivers, who have become the target of the protests against the President Michel Martelly government.

Interviewed by Hector Herrera Cabral on his D’Agenda TV program yesterday, Sunday 19 April 2015, Peralta said that a freight truck driver had disappeared a year ago, but neither he nor the truck has been found.

He said that now that the Haitian authorities are not able to guarantee the life of the transporters, large distribution centers must to be built on the border so that Haitian transporters can pick up their cargo themselves.

“If they want us to take cargo to Haiti, then they need to assign guards to us, not the Haitian police that we do not trust, but the Minustah agents so that our fellow truckers can have guarantees for their lives,” said Peralta, as reported in Diario Libre.
