AFS Intercultura in DR is now part of UNESCO

AFS student exchange and intercultural programs are now affiliated to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Pablo Vinas of AFS announced yesterday, Monday 20 April 2015 that the AFS global office had been granted consultative partner status with UNESCO, including the Dominican AFS operations. AFS Intercultura Dominican Republic office also coordinates the programs in Puerto Rico.

Making the announcement, AFS board chair Christian Werle and president Vicenzo Morlini said the affiliation with the United Nations is an important validation of the work of the AFS partners, particularly over the last few years. “The expansion of expertise network-wide education and ICL Strategy has helped make this a reality,” said the program’s chief officers. The ICL Strategy supports better inter-cultural linkages and communication.

The alliance is now an excellent opportunity to take many budding AFS initiatives to the next level by pursuing project-specific alliances with UNESCO, especially at a national level.

In the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, AFS organizes high school student exchanges and volunteer work programs for the over-18s, and offers services to participants in other inter-cultural programs.

This year AFS Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico announced one-year scholarships for 15-18-year old AFS students to study in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, China, Indonesia and Turkey in 2016-2017. Registration is still open for the regular high school program with opportunities to study abroad.

The DR has been part of AFS for 50 years now.
