Exchanging re-election for re-election

Diario Libre reports today, Wednesday 22 April 2015 that exchanging re-election for re-election is one of the proposals to encourage legislators to vote in favor of changing the 2010 Constitution to permit consecutive re-election. In the 2010 Constitution, President Danilo Medina is banned from running for office in 2016.

As reported, the government will reward legislators voting in favor of the motion with support for continuing in their posts, or at least being the party candidate.

Diario Libre reports that Minister of Industry and Commerce Jose del Castillo Savinon has already announced he would give up his aspirations to run for senator of Barahona in return for the support of PLD legislators who currently oppose re-election. Castillo says that Medina as the PLD candidate guarantees a sure win for the party. He said any other candidate would be “a risk.”

Nevertheless, Demostenes Martinez of Barahona said that Del Castillo’s proposal is not a positive contribution because this kind of deal will discredit Congress. He said it would be best if Medina and Fernandez were to reach an agreement. Martinez points out that in several provinces, candidates from both the Medina and Fernandez camps are contesting legislative posts.
