President Danilo Medina was in Santiago yesterday, Wednesday 22 April 2015 for the inauguration of the Swisher Dominicana cigar manufacturing plant. According to reports, this is a RD$2.1 billion investment. The plant has the capacity to produce 10 million cigars per day, said Swisher Dominicana president Augusto Reyes. “The tobacco sector is moving ahead at full thrust, and the success of machine-made cigars is impressive, placing the Dominican Republic as the largest producer of cigars of this kind in the world. Swisher International president Peter Ghiloni visited the country to attend the event. Swisher is the United States’ dominant machine-made cigar company and the world’s largest cigar maker.
