Abinader leads in PRM primary vote count

The first bulletin of the PRM primary held yesterday, Sunday, 26 April 2015, shows former PRD vice presidential candidate Luis Abinader leading former President Hipolito Mejia 70% to 28% of the counted votes. The bulletin was issued on Monday, 27 April 2015 at 1:30am with 16% or 428 of 2,698 tables counted.

Abinader had a lead of 45,809 votes (70.5%), Mejia received 18,139 votes (28.05%), Geanilda Vasquez 613 votes (0.96%) and Amaury Justo Duarte 301 (0.46%). Political analysts expect the trend to be maintained in the overall vote count.

The voting began at 8am, but it did not start until up to three hours later in many stations because of delays in the arrival of the materials. The vote was extended in some polling stations because of the delay in the start, but in others, people in line were not able to vote when the centers closed as scheduled at 6pm. The delays in the distribution of the voting material also affected voting in several centers abroad.

Speaking after the announcement of the results of the first bulletin, Abinader said that he would start “knocking on the doors that are needed to procure a convergence of opposition political forces to win the 2016 election.”

Abinader said that if elected President he would build a prosperous and fair nation based on the law, with a government that does not steal and where there are opportunities for women and young people.

He said it was time to leave behind us a nation where half of the population lives in poverty and where being young is synonymous with being unemployed and where women have to struggle the double for the same opportunities and our elderly people are forgotten after a lifetime of hard work.

“We have to open the way for a land of equality of rights between men and women, open the doors to quality education, and the first job for the young. Let us build together a safe country, where there is work for families to have stability at home, provide education and health to their children and loved ones. Let us end the vicious circle of political patronage and populism that feeds and promotes extreme poverty,” he said in his campaign speech. He criticized the ruling PLD for rampant corruption, impunity and kidnapping of justice.
