The Attorney General Office ordered the Clinica de Cirugia Plastica Contreras to be shut down on Friday 24 April 2015. The aesthetic surgery clinic, owned by controversial plastic surgeon Dr. Edgar Contreras, came under scrutiny after the death of a 23-year old woman following a surgical procedure. Contreras has been the subject of several malpractice lawsuits.
US citizen Sharlene Cedeno died during the operation. She had come from the United States on Tuesday 21 April for a lipo-sculpture operation that cost her her life. She was single and had no children. Relatives said she died as a result of medical malpractice, and that she died from a cardiac arrest. A clinic representative said she died due to complications resulting from a laryngospasm after the operation.
Contreras has been tried for malpractice on several occasions. In June 2014, his clinic also was shut down.
