Japan to assist with disaster relief

On Friday, 25 April 2015, the Ministry of Foreign Relations announced the signing of an agreement with the government of Japan for a donation of RD$2.5 billion for disaster relief equipment.

Japanese Ambassador Takashi Fuchigami signed the agreement with Foreign Minister Andres Navarro. The equipment for tackling natural disasters more effectively includes communications gear, water purification equipment, temporary toilets and lighting devices. The Dominican Republic’s geographical location makes it vulnerable to the impact of climate change, Navarro highlighted when signing of the agreement.

Ambassador Fuchigami said that the donation is aimed at strengthening cooperation and friendship between the two countries. He reiterated his country’s willingness to share its historical experience of natural disasters and the lessons learned with the Dominican Republic.
