Conjoined twins doing OK

The conjoined twins born at the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez Regional University Hospital in Santiago on Tuesday, 28 April 2015 are in a stable condition. The baby girls, who are joined at the thorax and the abdomen, are now at the Arturo Grullon Children’s Hospital. A hospital spokesman said that the babies could be surgically separated, as they do not share a heart or a stomach.

“The newborns have an omphalocele, which is a type of defect in the abdominal wall and the intestine is covered by a membrane. Right now we are considering surgery, but first they will have to undergo a series of specialized tests before we decide on the next step,” says a press release from the hospital.

Their 26-year old mother, Marianela Abreu, who is from La Vega, gave birth by C-section in the 36th week of her pregnancy, on Tuesday afternoon, 28 April 2015. The twins have a combined weight of 5 kg, according to Dr. Austria de la Rosa, director of the Cabral y Baez Hospital in Santiago.
