Clash in Congress over re-election

Internal confrontations were evident within the Leonel Fernandez and Danilo Medina factions of the PLD in Congress yesterday, Tuesday 5 May 2015.

Tourism Minister and PLD presidential pre-candidate Francisco Javier Garcia directly accused former President Leonel Fernandez of obstructing the bill to reform the constitution to allow President Danilo Medina to run for election again. He said that Fernandez would be responsible for a split in the party.

“The legislators should not take such an irrational position. Danilo Medina has the same right as Leonel had to lead an eight-year government,” he said. According to Garcia, the former President holds the key to unity and victory in one hand, and the key to division and defeat in the other. He warned that any legislator who votes against reform would not be a senator or deputy again. He said that a senator does not win alone, but with everyone’s votes, including the Danilo supporters.
