The Justice First Foundation has asked for the withdrawal of four of the five Supreme Court judges due to hear a case against the decision to stop proceedings against the former Minister of Public Works, Victor Diaz Rua, for alleged corruption and money laundering.
The judges who were withdrawn were Esther Agelan Casasnovas, Frank Soto, Alejandro Moscoso Segarra and Hiroito Reyes. The only one remaining was the president of the court Miriam German Brito, who decided to delay the hearing until the Supreme Court decided who should now hear the case.
National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso did not join in with the request for the judges to withdraw, as the Prosecution Office wants the case to proceed. She described the process as both tortuous and embarrassing, saying that there had not been one decision made which was based on the law.
The case dates back to 4 June 2012 when the First Justice Foundation issued a writ against Diaz Rua, followed by an investigation by the National District Prosecution Service, which was later archived.
