Andres Navarro: immigration grace period ends 17 June

Foreign Minister Andres Navarro has confirmed the Dominican government will not extend the National Foreigner Legalization Plan beyond its 17 June 2015 expiration date. He said once the term expires, all foreigners living in the country illegally are subject to the application of migratory laws, as reported in El Dia.

He said the extension of the plan is not up for discussion because the term has been long and efforts have been made to reach out to the largest number of immigrants.

He said there should not be criticism because the Dominican Republic like all other countries is a government under the rule of the law, with a Constitution, which has specific immigration laws. He says that all that comes to an end is the grace period the government has given for people to regularize their status.

“As of then, the normal application of the Migration Law continues, so there is no reason for the country to be criticized. The measures are being taken to apply the laws in a regular manner,” he told the press.

He said that the Haitian government has been respectful and has not requested an extension of the term.
