Barrick Gold will pay treasury millions

The president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo, Manuel Rocha has revealed that they will be paying more than US$300 million to the Dominican treasury this year. The total could be US$100 million less this year than the US$400 million paid last year to the Dominican government. This is attributed to the decline in the price of gold that has fallen from US$1,650 to US$1,160 per ounce.

Nevertheless he said that they hoped prices would rise by the end of the year, which would help the Dominican treasury as well as the company.

Rocha also revealed that they were currently in discussion with the government authorities to see if they could start repair work on the old mine, Rosario Dominicano, which is estimated to cost US$75 million. Originally the government and Barrick were going to split the costs but he said that Barrick Gold had now decided to put up all the money.
