No agreement yet in the PLD

Supporters of President Danilo Medina’s re-election bid published an advertisement in the media today, Wednesday 13 May 2015, to show support. The advertisement states that 363 members of the Central Committee of 635 members and 23 members of the 38-member Political Committee are in favor of the motion to change Article 124 of the 2010 Constitution to enable President Danilo Medina to run for re-election.

This means that supporters of President Medina’s re-election make up the majority within the party.

Nevertheless, legislators loyal to former President Leonel Fernandez went public yesterday, Tuesday 12 May 2015 to confirm their support for Fernandez in his opposition to the change of the Constitution. As reported in El Dia, deputy Henry Meran said the amendment would impose a reform that is disproportionate and unviable, outside of consensus and democratic participation.

Also speaking in favor of the Leonel Fernandez block of the PLD, senator for San Juan de la Maguana Felix Bautista called for prudence and said that party unity must prevail as well as the defense of the best interests of the Dominican people as a guarantee for development, as quoted in El Dia.

Meanwhile, acting PRSC party president Victor (Ito) Bisono called for public consultations on the modification of the Constitution. “A party cannot take on the right to dispose of the Constitution as if it were some kind of object,” said Bisono. The PRSC has acted as an ally of the PLD since the first Leonel Fernandez government in 1996.
