Four men and a woman, including a boat captain have been arrested in La Altagracia province, accused of being members of an international ring that tried to take 117 people to Puerto Rico illegally last week.
Boat captain Lucas de la Cruz Alvarez (Chitin), Jose Antonio Paredes Marinez (Jose Maly), Eddy Jose Reyes Reyes, Melvin Then Peguero and Aracelis Peguero were arrested and the public prosecution service will be asking for them to be sent to pre-trial detention.
Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito announced the arrests yesterday, Monday 25 May 2015, accompanied by Dominican Naval Intelligence chief Captain Jose Manuel Cabrera Ulloa and Naval spokesman Daniel de la Rosa.
The Attorney General pointed out that the ringleader, Silvestre Antonio Then Peralta (El Chino), was out on bail despite having being sentenced to 10 years for the same crime.
