No need for a re-election referendum

The Foundation for Institutionalism and Justice (FINJUS) says that the main constitution experts in the country agree that a referendum is not necessary to reform the Constitution and allow consecutive re-election.

According to executive vice president Julio Cesar Castanos Guzman they also said that the law that is needed to convene constitutional reform was not an organic law.

He said that they thought that the Constitutional Court should decide on the debate about the referendum and the law.

Former President Leonel Fernandez, who is president of the ruling PLD party, conditioned his approval of the change to the 2010 Constitution to reinstate presidential consecutive re-election to the celebrating of a national referendum to ask the people if they are in agreement. The referendum is estimated to cost upwards of RD$800 million.
