Minister of Foreign Relations Andres Navarro was in Puerto Rico last week for meetings aimed at creating the Institute of Dominicans Abroad (Index). The Instituto de los Dominicanos en el Exterior (Index) had been a campaign promise of President Danilo Medina in 2012.
The new government entity will work to establish mechanisms to respond to the needs of Dominican expatriates. He announced that President Danilo Medina would inaugurate the first branch of the organization during a visit to New York in September 2015. Other branches will follow. He said that Index, which is part of President Danilo Medina’s new foreign policy, seeks to improve the quality of life of Dominicans who live abroad as well as to strengthen Dominican identity among second, third and fourth generation Dominicans.
