Non-mining Dominican exports drop 20%

Barrick gold mining exports keep total Dominican exports showing growth, despite having declined by 4.3% this first quarter compared to last year. However, a recent press release from the Dominican Republic Industries Association points to a downward trend in non-mining exports.

AIRD president Campos de Moya highlights that there has been a 20% decline when these exports are compared to the same period in 2012. “This means that for every five dollars that we received for non-mining exports in the first quarter of 2012, we did not receive a dollar in the first quarter of 2015.”

In a press release, AIRD said the DR has not been able to find a way to achieve sustained growth of exports, neither in volume nor in value.

“What are we doing wrong that local manufacturing has not been able to reach a sustained growth of our exports? Which are the economic and social implications of the production policies we are implementing in the Dominican Republic?” asks AIRD.
