New Minister of Energy and Mines Antonio Isa Conde favors the development of small mining ventures versus large mining operations. As reported in Diario Libre, Isa Conde said that large-scale mining has incurred high environmental costs. He proposes supporting small mining operations as part of the national development strategy.
He says that it is essential to regulate the small metal and non-metal mining companies to turn them into environmentally responsible productive activities.
In a press release, the Ministry of Energy and Mines said that the development of small mining would be the Ministry’s new focus. He stressed that it was important for the development of communities across the country with an integrated vision that supports joint activities such as arts and crafts and tourism.
He said the work to support small mining ventures would be carried out with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce’s small business division, the Ministry of Tourism and their work with artisans, and within the communities themselves.
