Abinader proposes new job-creation machine

During the ceremony where he was proclaimed his party’s presidential candidate yesterday, Sunday, 14 June 2015, the PRM’s Luis Abinader launched his “Victory 16” campaign. He proposed a broad-based political and social consensus to ensure a change of government in 2016. He said the ruling PLD party has “kidnapped democracy” in the Dominican Republic.

In his speech at the Palacio de los Deportes in Santo Domingo, he stated that President Danilo Medina had secured the constitutional amendment through a pact that guarantees the rule of corruption and impunity. The ruling PLD made a pact with opposition PRD and PRSC legislators in return for the votes needed for passing the re-election clause.

He announced that the PRM would be knocking on all doors to bring the ideas of change to all households around the country.

The opposition leader criticized President Medina’s administration, saying that in 15 years of PLD rule the public debt has quadrupled, unemployment has risen and the number of poor people has increased in the country.

He described the PLD governments as a failed economic and social model with misplaced priorities, and pointed out that in the period between January 2013 and May 2015 alone, the government spent a staggering RD$7.24 billion on advertising.

He said that to deal effectively with problems that include unemployment, the high cost of living, insecurity, corruption, drug trafficking, blackouts and lack of quality health and education, the nation needs a different vision, approach and development model.

He said the government he intends to lead from 2016 onwards would be a “job-creation machine,” with appropriate incentives awarded.
