Miguel Vargas of the PRD to explain his position

PRD president Miguel Vargas has announced that he will address the country at 10pm tonight, 15 June 2015 on Telemicro, Channel 5.

The PRD was once the country’s main opposition party, receiving 47% of the vote in the 2012 presidential election. However, internal conflicts between dissident factions and years of alliance between party president Miguel Vargas and the ruling PLD party has resulted in polls attributing barely 3-5% of voting intentions to his party.

The support of the PRD legislators was decisive for the PLD to obtain the needed votes to re-instate re-election in the Constitution to allow President Danilo Medina to run for a second term. Recent polls had shown that if Medina was not the candidate, no other PLD politician had sufficient popularity to win the election.

This is the second time that Miguel Vargas has given significant political support to the PLD. In 2012, Vargas Maldonado signed the pivotal “Blue Ties Pact” which gave the green light for Congress to pass a constitutional amendment that enabled former President Hipolito Mejia to run in the 2012 election and then President Fernandez to seek a fourth term in 2016.
