Foreign arrivals up 6.5% in May 2015

The Central Bank reports that tourist arrivals in May were up 8.1% compared to the same period in 2014. An additional 31,073 people visited the country, for a total of 416,984 visitors. 85.8% were foreigners, the rest non-resident Dominicans. Foreign tourists showed an increase of 6.5% for 22,005 more arrivals.

Non-resident arrivals are now at 2,378,348 travelers, for an increase of 6.8%. This means 150,762 more travelers compared to January-May 2014. 114,665 were foreign tourists. The Central Bank attributes the increase in arrivals to economic recovery in the US, the main source of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic.

Most tourists arrived via the Punta Cana International Airport with 66.7%, followed by Las Americas in Santo Domingo 16%, Puerto Plata 9.7%, Cibao in Santiago 3.6%, La Romana 2.4% and others 1.6%.
