Yesterday Monday, 15 June 2015, PRD president and the party’s presidential candidate in 2016, Miguel Vargas Maldonado announced in a televised speech that he had given up his presidential aspirations and would concentrate on supporting Danilo Medina in his re-election campaign.
Vargas said that his decision to withdraw his candidacy was part of an agreement proposed by Medina. He described the agreement as “a political agreement for a Shared Government with National Unity”.
Vargas said that after traveling all over the country and listening to the people, the responsible conclusion that he has reached is that the people want Danilo Medina to stay on as President and that they also want national unity. He said that they had proposed uniting the opposition but that was not accepted and so he had done the next best thing for the country, as a Dominican and as a member of the PRD, which was to postpone his presidential aspirations in order to fulfill the national agenda.
He went on to say that the agreement meant that some very important work could be done, including the approval of the Political Parties Bill and the reform of the electoral law, both of which he said were guarantees for democracy. He said that his agreement with Medina also included joint work towards the citizen’s security pact, a fiscal pact and an electricity pact.
Finally he stated that the agreement also gave his fellow PRD members the opportunity to serve their country as members of Congress or in municipal governments. He said that he would now concentrate on the PRD electoral campaign and travel around the country in support of the alliance between the PLD and the PRD candidates.
