The Ministry of Environment has announced that drones will be used in surveillance activities withint he boundaries of national parks. A drone that was purchased through a donation from Petro Caribe has been providing high resolution digital panoramas of national park areas. The contact at Petro Caribe is Jose Alfredo Rizek.
The drone can fly at altitudes of 8,000 feet (2 km) and has a range of 20 km and can reach speeds of 60 km per hour.
The Ministry reported the new equipment will also help to rescue missing persons in forests and difficult areas and to identify areas with challenging terrain and to gather information where forest fires have occurred.
Minister of Environment Bautista Rojas Gomez said that the equipment will first be used in the Los Haitises National Park.
Rojas also announced the donation of a Toyota Hilux truck by Barrick Pueblo Nuevo for patrolling in national parks.
