Charles Rangel criticizes De Blasio for blasting Dominican migratory plan

In a meeting with Dominican consul in New York, Eduardo Selman, US Representative Charles Rangel described statements by Mayor of New York Bill De Blasio to the National Foreigner Legalization Plan as “unfounded, baseless and misguided”. He commented that the United States has repatriated more Dominicans and Haitians to their countries than the citizens of Haiti that could be returned from Dominican territory. He said that before issuing an opinion on migratory reform to regularize the status of foreigners in a country or any other situation, the authorities of other countries need to first become knowledgeable of the facts.

Rangle said that initially there may have been the perception the reform was about a massive deportation of undocumented Haitians. But he said he now understands the efforts are to resolve the migratory status of the country’s residents.

“Human rights have been respected, and even the US ambassador to the Dominican Republic has publicly commended the Dominican government for the way the migratory reform is being conducted, Consul Selman told the US representative.

He said US Ambassador James Brewster has already visited the Migration Agency foreigner transit center in Haina to observe firsthand how the process is unfolding.
