Juan Jimenez Coll: More work to be done to create LGBT rights awareness

Dominican gay activist Juan Jimenez Coll, in an interview with Diario Libre, says that there is much work still to be done in the Dominican Republic regarding discrimination against gays. He criticized that the 2010 Constitution specifically states that a marriage is between a man and a woman, excluding the possibility of a legal union between persons of the same gender. He says this contradicts Art. 39 of the Constitution that establishes equality of rights before the law without discrimination for gender, color, social or personal conditions. He expects the DR to follow in the footsteps of the United States where the Supreme Court ruled on Friday 26 June 2015 that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.

“Sexual orientations are not chosen, you are who you are who you are and one day you discover… The same way you are born heterosexual you can be born gay, lesbian, transsexual, bisexual, hermaphrodite or intersexual,” he said.

Jimenez is a professional astrologist.
