Andres Navarro meets Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the Vatican

Minister of Foreign Relations Andres Navarro met Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the Vatican last week as part of a worldwide tour to explain the scope of the National Foreigner Legalization Plan (PNRE). Parolin has been in charge of foreign relations for the Vatican since 2013.

The Foreign Relations Minister has been meeting with a number of key international leaders in government and civil society and religious sectors in an attempt to dispel rumors and innuendo that have circulated in various media outlets regarding the Dominican government’s immigration plan. As part of the plan, more than 288,000 persons residing in the Dominican Republic have registered to regularize their status, most of whom are undocumented Haitians.

“The Dominican Republic wants to maintain open communication channels with the Vatican to immediately address any questions or concerns that The Pope may have concerning the National Foreigner Legalization Plan”. Navarro explained in detail to Vatican official the steps the government has taken to assure a transparent, fair and just implementation of the Plan.

Navarro said that the Catholic Church can be at ease, because no foreigner with irregular status will have his rights violated; on the contrary, the government has implemented the plan with the highest regard for human rights and is understands the sensitive nature of the migratory situation in the country.

As reported, Cardinal Parolin thanked Navarro for the information and expressed the Vatican’s appreciation of the efforts of the governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic to resolve common challenges and encouraged the continued effort to foster a development agenda through the Bilateral Mixed Commission.
