Gustavo Montalvo accuses PM Haiti of spreading falsehoods

The Dominican government called “categorically false” statements by Prime Minister of Haiti Evans Paul concerning the supposed deportation of 21 Haitian persons who had been “arrested in their houses” and deported to Haiti without the due process.

Secretary of the Presidency, Gustavo Montalvo, said that the deportations that Paul described never occurred. Montalvo said that because the deportation program has not yet begun, no one has been deported from the Dominican Republic.

Moreover, he said that reporters from Le Novelliste newspaper of Haiti confirmed on Friday, 3 July 2015 that there has not been a single case of deportation of Haitians from the Dominican Republic.

Montalvo says he does not know the reasons that some Haitian government officials are making false statements that feed a smear campaign against the Dominican Republic. He went on to say that these false accusations go against the better interests of Haitians themselves.

“I want to make it clear that our government will not abandon its commitment to respect for human rights; but neither will it remain passive before baseless accusations. It is time to stop this unjustifiable campaign of misinformation that has no basis in fact,” he said.

Montalvo commented that the inflammatory rhetoric coming from Haitian officials could be attributed to a group of Haitian politicians who find it easier to blame outsiders for nonexistent problems rather than having to confront a host of difficulties at home.

“It is time that the Haitian authorities assume their responsibilities to deal with the challenges of addressing the needs of their own citizens and guiding their country into the future,” said Montalvo.
