Parents of Ana Maria Belique used IDs of Dominicans to register her

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) Roberto Rosario explained that Ana Maria Belique, representative of the non-governmental organization Reconoci.do, is a beneficiary of the Dominican government program that has issued Dominican documents to foreigners whose past registrations were deemed irregular. Following international lobbies, the Medina administration pushed through Congress Law 169-14 to address cases such as Belique’s and re-instate her Dominican identity, on grounds that she was innocent of the fraud that led to her Dominican documentation.

Speaking to the press, Rosario explained that her Haitian parents had registered her using identification cards of other persons, two Dominicans, which is considered a fraudulent act.

Belique is one of the beneficiaries of the Law 169-14 that established that applicants that could show that they themselves did not commit fraud could benefit from the government policy that allows for the reinstatement of the legal status of these individuals. In the case of Belique, it was shown that her parents had committed the fraud and not Belique herself. Therefore, she was re-issued documents legalizing her status in the Dominican Republic.
