The self-confessed hit man, Michael Antonio Mejia (El Mono), who stated at the beginning of the year that he had carried out the murders of 15 men whom he had been hired to kill, was shot and killed yesterday, 13 July 2015, in a supposed attempt to escape from custody. The incident occurred in front of the police station on the Sanchez highway in San Cristobal.
In the shootout, a 13-year old minor was injured during the incident when a stray bullet struck the youngster in the leg as he watched the drama unfold from his parent’s home. In addition, another two inmates who presumably escaped during the chaos are being sought by the police.
According to a source who spoke to Diario Libre, Mejia had been taken to San Cristobal for a hearing and was on his way back to jail in Azua when he, together with another two inmates, took the guns off their guards, which led to the shoot-out which claimed his life. Mejia’s remains were taken to the morgue in the Juan Pablo Pina Hospital.
