On 13 July 2015, the Dominican National Assembly presented a commemorative scroll to President Ma Ying-jeou of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in recognition of his solidarity with the Dominican Republic.
President of the National Assembly, Cristina Lizardo Mezquita confirmed that Dominican legislators were always ready to cooperate with the government of Taiwan and would like to find ways to even increase the cultural and economic bonds between the two countries.
Lizardo expressed the deep gratitude of the Dominican people for the cooperation and support that the government of Taiwan has provided to the country over many years.
In President Ma Ying-jeou’s remarks to the legislators, he highlighted his country’s donations to the Dominican Republic that have included motorcycles and ambulances for the 911 Emergency Service. This particular foreign assistance program has been credited with curbing crime and improving health services.
President Ma Ying-jeou affirmed his government’s commitment to continue to collaborate with the Office of First Lady to build and equip five more Integrated Attention Centers for the Disabled (CAID) across the country.
Ma Ying-jeou ended his speech with a phrase from Juan Pablo Duarte “When we work for the country, we work for our children and for ourselves”. President Ma Ying-jeou arrived Sunday, 12 July to the Dominican Republic. From here he is expected to next visit Haiti and Nicaragua, the two other Republic of China allies in the Central America and Caribbean region.
Ma also met with President Danilo Medina, who was joined by an entourage of more than 80 senior government officials, legislators and business representatives. Prior to arriving in the Dominican Republic, President Ma Ying-jeou visited his alma mater, Harvard University, in Boston, USA.
