22-year old Yamilet Pena won silver in the women’s vault competition in the Toronto Pan Am Games on Tuesday, 14 July 2015. This is the first medal the country has ever won in gymnastics in a Pan American Games. The winner of the event was Cuban Marcia Videux with 14,737 points, followed by Yamilet Pena with 14,250 and Canadian Ellie Black with 14,087. Ellie Black was the winner of the all-around gymnastics gold at Pan Am Games.
Yamilet Pena is competing in her second Pan American Games. She was a vault finalist in the London 2012 Olympics, placing sixth.
The Dominican Republic as of 14 July 2015 is in 11th place in the Toronto Pan Am Games with one gold (women’s weightlifting), one silver (gymnastics), and four bronze medals (men’s badminton, women’s weightlifting).
