Navarro to meet with Latin American ambassadors in NY

Foreign Minister Andres Navarro is scheduled to meet in New York City with UN-accredited ambassadors of Latin American (Grulac) countries to explain the Dominican migratory policy and offer details on the National Foreigner Legalization Plan (PNRE). The plan seeks to give legal status to all living in the Dominican Republic.

The meeting was hastily arranged after the impasse that occurred following the Dominican government’s strong objections to the controversial statement of Secretary General Luis Almagro that “generally on a single island there cannot be two countries” made in an interview with CNN Espanol. The Dominican government has since desisted from a meeting with Haiti mediated by the OAS or any other international body, until Haitian authorities retract the accusations made against the Dominican Republic’s migratory policy.

As reported in El Dia, the Foreign Minister Navarro said: “Today more than ever, our nation must act as one, putting internal differences aside and focus on everything that unites us, so that we can show the world who we are and what we have accomplished as a society. In particular, we must show to the world the positive social impact that our current immigration policy is fostering.”
