The assistant attorney general for Women’s Affairs, Roxanna Reyes, has announced that there have been 85,000 complaints of domestic violence and sexual abuse so far this year. In an interview with Federico Mendez on Santo Domingo television, Reyes said that 20,000 callers to 911 reported domestic violence, sexual abuse, and verbal and psychological violence between couples.
Reyes reported that 911 system statistics indicate that emergency calls reporting domestic violence were the fourth highest category of incidences being investigated by the authorities. She said that thousands of restraining orders have been issued to protect women and children against domestic violence. The government’s goal is to assure that not one single woman be harmed or killed as a result of domestic violence.
Reyes estimated that 106,000 women and their children and dependents have been aided by the 911 service. The 911 service makes it easier to place the complaints.
She went on to say there had been between 40,000 and 50,000 complaints of domestic violence per year for the past few years. The rise in domestic abuse cases reported this year to 85,000 has been alarming. What is particularly sad is that around 80% of the women who died as a result of domestic violence had never filed a complaint against the person that eventually caused her death.
