Over 400,000 students in higher education

According to a study on the use of information technology and communication in the institutions of higher education, the system of higher education in the Dominican Republic had 415,294 students registered in 2014 with 41.14% of the students enrolled in the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the state university.

The lead author of the study, Felix Farias Campos, said that there had been a 6% annual increase in the number of students enrolled in Dominican colleges and universities since 2009. Enrollments in the country’s largest universities are as follows: UASD, 170,893; Santiago Technological University (UTESA) 48,370; Organization and Method (O&M), 31,956; University of the Caribbean (Unicaribe), 18,906, and PUCMM 14,844.

The number of students registered in smaller universities include, the National Institute of Exact Science (INCE) 465; Felix Adam Experimental (UNEFA), 459; Interamericana (UNICA), 372; Dominican Psychological Industrial (UPID), 365 and the Dominican American Cultural Institute (UNICDA), 362.

The Dominican universities employed 18,054 teaching staff of which 5,920 worked in the UASD, followed by PUCMM with 1,469 and then UTESA with 1,412.

The results of the study showed that only 36% of the universities were fully up to speed in the information technology and digital era.
