Support for new medical examination

The Ministry of Public Health has announced its support for the legislation being studied in the Senate that would establish a Single Competence Examination to Practice Medicine (EUC). The bill was recently passed by a majority of legislators in the Chamber of Deputies.

The exam seeks to maintain high standards for physicians practicing in the Dominican by creating a means to assure that physicians possess the skills and competencies to provide high quality healthcare to patients once these candidates have obtained their degree in medicine.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, if the legislation becomes law, it will facilitate the placement of doctors in residency programs at a number of hospitals, eliminating the requirement of physicians to complete a one-year internship in public hospitals.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, which oversees graduate and postgraduate education in the country, will be in charge of developing the policies of the new “Single Examination”.

The Ministry of Public Health would issue the exequatur, or permit to practice medicine, that is now issued by the Office of the Presidency.
