The Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-22, 25-, 25-21) to win the bronze medal at the women’s volleyball championship during the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. This is the second medal the DR has won in volleyball in a Pan Am Games. The DR was first in Santo Domingo in 2003.
Veterans Annerys Vargas and Prisilla Rivera, who played on the winning 2003 team, were among the most productive offensive players in the match, with 13 and 10 points, respectively, reported Norceca.
Puerto Rico committed 37 unforced errors to 25 by the winners. The DR held the advantage in blocks 12-8 while the losers led in attacks 54-46.
Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic: “We are so happy about winning this medal because that’s what we worked for. We could have gone further but we had a lot of difficulties with a lot of injuries. We never had our group 100% and it was a hard work to win the medal. The girls deserve all the credit for their dedication.”
