An employee of the Technical Investigations Corps of the Attorney General’s office in Colombia, Carmen Sofia Carreno, and four other Colombians were arrested upon returning to Bogota, Colombia at the El Dorado International Airport from a flight from Santo Domingo. The five suspects had more than US$1 million hidden in their luggage. The other persons arrested in the case included Carreno’s daughter, who is an employee at the government pensions office, an aviation student, a police officer and a cosmetics salesperson, none of whom were said to be able to justify being in possession of that large a sum of hard currency. Carreno had traveled to the Dominican Republic four times so far this year and was being tailed by the authorities in Colombia.
Carreno is employed as the personal secretary of Julian Quintana, director of the Technical Investigations Corps of the Attorney General’s office in Colombia. The press in Colombia reported that Carreno had worked with him previously when he was at the unit of asset laundering of the prosecutor’s office.
