Felix Bautista case drags on

The judges in the Supreme Court of Justice could not come to a consensus in the case of San Juan de la Maguana senator Feliz Bautista regarding the appeal made by the Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito against the decision there was no case to answer for Bautista and another six accused of corruption and money laundering. The charges are for accusations of profiteering when he was director of the Office of Supervisory Public Works of the Presidency during the governments of former President Leonel Fernandez.

The court president, Miriam German Brito announced that after several meetings, the four judges, herself and Frank Soto Sanchez, Esther Agelan Casasnovas and Juan Hirohito Reyes, who heard the case, could not agree whether to accept the appeal or not as they were divided two and two. Therefore she has rescheduled the hearing for 22 September 2015 when the case would start from the beginning.

She said that the Supreme Court president, Mariano German would have to appoint another judge, so there would be five, to reach a majority decision.

On leaving the court, the media reported that Felix Bautista, who is also secretary of organization of the ruling PLD party, was obviously annoyed and his bodyguards attempted to impede some of the photographers who were outside as well as some journalists from doing their work.
