Dominican airline makes first flight

Pawa Dominicana had its inaugural flight from St. Martin to Santo Domingo, yesterday, Monday, 17 August 2015. Following the landing of Pawa Dominicana Flight 72l there was a special ceremony at the Las Americas International Airport, in which Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez blessed the airline’s fleet of planes, each of which prominently displays the Dominican Flag.

The airline will initially have direct flights from Santo Domingo to Aruba, Curacao and St. Martin. A spokesperson for the airline promised that within six months Pawa Domincana will introduce new routes to San Juan Puerto Rico, Havana, Cuba, Miami and New York.

During the inauguration ceremony, airline president, Simon Garcia praised the facilities provided by the Dominican government via the Civil Aviation department and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

The company will start with 24 flights a week covering routes not offered by other airlines. He also said that the company would transport Dominican products to Caribbean Islands and other American markets, thus contributing to a growing Dominican export economy. Garcia went on to say that the airline is exploring the possibility of expanding operations to other Dominican airports, such as Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.

Present at the inauguration were Minister of Industry and Commerce Jose del Castillo Savinon, the director of the Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) Alejandro Herrera and other personalities linked to commercial aviation and tourism. Herrera said that six other airlines, including three foreign and three Dominican have pending approvals for start of new flights.
