CAASD announces deficit of 85,000,000 gallons in Greater Santo Domingo

On Wednesday, 19 August 2015, the executive director of the Santo Domingo Water and Sewer Corporation (CAASD) Alejandro Montas, reported to El Nuevo Diario that as a consequence of the prolonged drought, the water supply for the inhabitants of Greater Santo Domingo has fallen by 85,000,000 gallons a day.

The official made the announcement during the meeting of the National Water Roundtable, held in the conference room of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI). All the directors of the state agencies that deal with the water sector were present at the meeting.

Montas said that in spite of recent rains that fell in the watersheds of the rivers that supply the Santo Domingo Aqueduct, the deficit in the supply of water is still very significant.

Montas noted that 400,000,000 gallons of water that are currently consumed each day by the population of Greater Santo Domingo exceed the capacity of the water system.

Montas said that at the present time, there are tank trucks that are distributing millions of gallons of water free to families that live in West Santo Domingo, Pedro Brand, los Alcarrizos, Herrera, Las Palmas and other barrios.
