DR defeats Argentina in Volleyball World Cup

The Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team scored an important victory 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 25-15) against Argentina yesterday, Monday 24 August 2015 in the ongoing FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup in Tokyo. This was the second win for the team. The DR next faces Cuba on 26 August 2015, its archrival. In the same tournament, Cuba lost to Japan 3-0.

FIVB reported on the game against Argentina:

The Dominicans had a productive scoring output as four players scored in double figures. Rivera scored 15 points, Yonkaira Paola Pena Isabel and Gina Altagracia Mabru Casilla had 14 points apiece, and Marianne Fersola Roberto scored 13 points for the Dominican Republic. Emilce Sosa and Josefina Fernandez scored 13 points each for Argentina.

Fersola and Rivera combined for nine points in the first set n all from the attack line n to spearhead the Dominican Republic’s 25-21 win over Argentina. The Argentines exerted better effort from the start until the middle of the second set, but Dominican Republic later on demolished the lead and tied the game at 19-all. The Dominicans reached the end of the second set 25-22 with a block on Argentina’s Josefina Fernandez.

After a series of deadlocks and lead changes in the third frame, Dominican Republic emerged on top of the second technical timeout 16-13. After the short break, Argentina’s reinforced their blocking and notched seven straight points to grab the lead 20-16. Argentine captain secured the set 25-19. Dominican Republic recovered and commanded a 17-9 lead in the fourth set, until they secured it at 25-15 with a spike from Rivera.
