The Dominican Republic is a world leader in the export of organic chocolate. In contrast, the nation’s chocolate consumption (3,000 tons a year) is one of the lowest in the world. Executives of the Cacao Cluster want to change this. Cluster president Ricardo Munne says one of the Cluster’s goals is to increase domestic consumption. He said that chocolate manufacturers have invested in producing good quality chocolate.
In an interview with Hoy, Munne admitted that local productivity is low. He attributed this to deficiencies in genetic varieties, irrigation, specialists, use of traditional methods and aging plantations, as well as need to improve plantation access roads.
